The 11th annual SohnX San Francisco conference on Thursday involved fund managers doing deep dives for some of their favorite investments, including high-profile U.S. companies and an emerging player in South America. Gil Simon, the chief investment officer at technology-focused hedge fund SoMa Equity Partners, explained why he was bullish on Uber . The investor said that concerns about the ridesharing company's ability to become profitable were overblown and that the stock could triple over the next two or three years. "Their ability to launch new services is second to none," Simon said, mentioning launch of grocery delivery in Florida. He also said that, when measured by gross bookings, Uber Eats is growing at a faster rate than the company's rideshare business initially did. Uber's stock has yet to reclaim its pre-pandemic highs and is more than 20% above where it opened during its inital public offering in May 2019. Simon said that concerns about Covid-19, profitability and regulation can all be overcome in the next year or two, and the stock would move higher once it scaled that "wall of worry." Glen Kacher, Light Street Capital, picked StoneCo , which he calls the "Square of Brazil." The investor said that, with the exception of not having an analogue to Cash App, Stone was a "carbon copy" of the U.S. payments company. Brazil's lower penetration of credit card and e-commerce should lead to more growth for Stone as Brazil catches up with the U.S. and U.K., Kacher said. Additionally, credit card processing in Brazil gets higher discount fees for the credit card payments and involve installment plans that make the ecosystem more profitable than in the U.S. Stone has also pushed into the software and digital banking industries, opening up further opportunities for growth, the investor said. Kacher praised the company's hub structure, which allows it to serve customers across the geographically massive country. He said the stock, which has gained nearly 40% year to date, could "easily" double in two years. "It's rare to see a company that is growing this fast and is this profitable. We're fired up about the stock," Kacher said. Other picks made at Sohn include mattress company Purple Innovation by No Street Capital's Jeff Osher and New Residential Investment Corp ., a real estate investment trust, from Canyon Partners co-founder Joshua Friedman. Howard Marks, co-founder of Oaktree Capital Management, said he saw an opportunity in "frontier" markets, including Nigeria and Bangladesh.
